Custard powder halwa recipe with video. This halwa is one of the easiest halwa recipes that you could make for Diwali or for any special occasion.
It is so easy and foolproof that even a beginner can try it out with confidence to get perfection.
All you have to do is to keep stirring the halwa till you get a glassy, glossy, perfect-looking halwa that you can slice and distribute to guests and friends.
This alone makes it a perfect recipe for beginners who want to make a sweet for Diwali to surprise their parents or friends.

Not only for Diwali, but this will also be perfect to make on any other special occasion as well or whenever you get a craving for some homemade sweets.
About
The best thing about this custard powder halwa is that there is no need to check for any string consistency of sugar syrup like in other halwa recipes which can be a real struggle for beginners especially.
There are only 5 ingredients that are needed to make this delicious halwa.
It takes only 15 to 20 mins of your time.
And also this halwa does not require much ghee than when compared to other sweets, making it easy for weight watchers to enjoy it without feeling guilty.
Ingredients
Custard Powder: Any flavor of custard powder will be apt to make this halwa. But I prefer using vanilla-flavored custard powder.
Sugar: Use regular granulated sugar.
Water: It helps to dissolve the custard powder and is not used to get any string consistency.
Ghee: Gives a good sheen to the halwa & a good aroma and flavor.
Cashewnuts: Though it is optional, it gives an aesthetic look to the halwa.
Instructions
Let's see how to make Custard Powder Halwa,
In a thick-bottomed or nonstick pan, mix all the ingredients without any lumps. Start cooking over high flame.
It will quickly become thick and will become glassy looking like jelly. Cook over low flame.
Keep stirring to avoid the bottom from sticking to the bottom.
When the halwa begins to pull away from the sides, it is time to transfer to the greased plate and slice them. Custard Powder Halwa is ready.
Recipe Notes
1. Once the jelly begins to form, it is better to use a flatter spatula for easy scraping around the sides.
2. You need to stir continuously to prevent the halwa from sticking to the pan.
3. If you are a beginner, use a nonstick pan which will make your job even easier.
4. I have used vanilla-flavored custard powder. Feel free to use other flavored custard powders too. But the color of the halwa will change based on the custard powder flavor you are using.
FAQ's
Can I replace sugar?
You can use either powdered organic jaggery or cane sugar in place of sugar but keep in mind that it will change the color of the halwa.
How do I get perfect squares?
Grease the knife that you are using to cut with ghee. Smooth the surface of the halwa with a ghee plate to get a smooth & level-looking top.
While the halwa is still warm, draw lines to mark the squares. Do not cut while the halwa is still hot as it will stick to the knife.
Storage
You can store this custard powder halwa at room temperature for 2 to 3 days and it keeps well for 7 days when refrigerated.
What if I miss the consistency?
Even if you miss the consistency & unable to make squares, you can still serve this in individual cups like you serve carrot halwa.

- 1 cup Custard powder
- 3 cups Sugar
- 4 cups Water
- 1 tablespoon Ghee
- 10 Cashew nuts chopped

Keep a plate ready by greasing it with ghee.
In a thick bottomed pan, add custard powder, water, sugar, and mix well without any lumps.
Keep the pan on the stove and begin by cooking over a high flame.
The mixture will begin to boil and start to thicken. Keep stirring.
Add ghee, cashew nuts, mix well, and reduce the flame. By now the mixture will look like a thick jelly and look glassy.
Keep stirring continuously for 8-10 mins till the mixture begins to form into a lump and begin pulling away from the sides.
Transfer the halwa to the greased plate and level the top. You can also sprinkle finely chopped nuts or melon seeds on top.
Draw lines using a sharp knife that is greased with ghee while the halwa is still warm.
Once the custard powder halwa cools down to room temperature, slice them and serve.
